Of all of the announced deaths in recent memory, that of George Carlin has made me the least sad.

Why, you ask?

A couple of reasons:

- he spent the greater part of his frankly long life speaking his mind loudly, entertainingly, and eloquently, all while getting paid for it; any of us can hope to be maybe one hundredth as successful at doing that

- there is no viable alternative to death

I am not encouraged by people who demand that there be some sort of recount and that he be brought back like some sort of necromantic clown for indefinitely extended entertainment. Eww.

With regards to death, particularly Carlin's, perhaps there is no good time. Perhaps there is no better time.

Vampire Weekend, self titled - Precious; offensively bouncy; weighed down by references I don't care about; I don't like the lead singer's voice. Defining moment: "BLAAAKE'S GOT A NEW FACE!" oh god shut up.

Madlib, the Beat Konducta Vol. 1 through 4 - I just don't understand this. If I understood which samples were from which sources, maybe I'd like it? Without vocal or any other forms of sonic glue, it (quite understandably) just sounds cobbled together. Loop loop loop loop I guess I'll just leave these few measures blank except for this fill and the song is over. Not rhythmically interesting or challenging. Perhaps this art of deejay-cobbling is more fun live, or with rhyming; I can't tell.

M.I.A., Kala - Much more effective and listenable Bollywood/Southeast Asian/lots of other places fusion. I have enjoyed this regularly over the past couple of days, but returning to it has been less pleasant. The first half of the album is far more irritating than the second half. Some irritating choices relating to pitch; otherwise cool songs like "The Turn" and "20 Dollar" are somewhat spoiled by refusal at a couple of critical points to cleave to the key the song is in. It's certainly not that M.I.A. can't sing. Grating up against clear and present tonality just bothers me, intentional or otherwise. Nails on a chalkboard, people. However, when this doesn't bother me, it's a generally enjoyable and (I assume) danceable album.

Also, I would like to let the world know that the term "Camel Case" is stupid, and, more importantly, that its implementation looks like ass. Oh, I'm sorry -- LooksLikeAss.

There is absolutely no limit on how seasonal I am. It's ridiculous! If there were any bit of Spring that could be bottled and dosed ("The Pharmacological Implications of Harold and Maude," 2008, Bizarroville), I would be unrecognizably pleasant so much more often. Seasonal Giddiness Upwelling is no less inscrutable than its wintry, anhedonic buddy, and while it is exactly as weird to be happy for no reason as it is to be sad, you would have to be pretty wack to turn down the offer.

There is a new commercial encouraging tourism to Virginia. A lone woman stands in front of a movie screen, walks through fields of indeterminate crops, casually brushing them. Other miscellaneous shots follow, some close-ups, some other detached wandering shots. "LIVE PASSIONATELY," the screen declares. At this point, I'm convinced she was killed by a drunk driver or something, due in no small part to the fact that the intensely melancholy Dave Matthews song "Stay or Leave" has been playing in the background. Matthews' voice sadly intones "Stay or leave; I want you not to go, but you should."

"Virginia," the commercial declares, "is for lovers."

I can't even begin to comment on how bizarre this commercial is.

I dreamt I walked in the margins of creation.

It was very poorly lit. Lots of dusty books, unreliable lighting, and a wayward spirit just out of reach.

We found self-organizing Scrabble games, but they weren't intelligent; they were merely playing out a set pattern over and over.

Finally we came to one that seemed like it could respond to questions. It had to be the right one, though, or it would wrest free from the set and we might never find another. (I blame this a little bit for that) So we asked "Are you using your last wish to sustain yourself indefinitely?" or maybe something more pithy than that.

and with that, the spell was broken; the last vestiges of rational consciousness let them recant the wish. Apparently they (one of many alien races that had inhabited this virtual Eden) had happened upon this wishy power and had thus doomed themselves to immortality and madness. The remaining power distributed itself evenly throughout all of us. While mortal, we still had some wacky coolness.

In the end, everybody resettled the still viable station. THE END
